Home schooling Parent Information Package

This is the Board of Education Policy, and this is not Law.  Please visit OFTP to inquire about your homeschooling rights.

Some general comments that are meant to guide you as you conduct the process:

  • This process is to fulfill our obligation to the Ministry to determine "if satisfactory instruction has taken place".
  • It is not meant to be an evaluation or assessment process.
  • Be absolutely objective.  Comment only on what you observe or what is reported directly to you (i.e. please do not make judgmental/subjective statements/observations.)
  • The following comments explain the intended outcome(s) for each step in the process:

  • There are two tasks to complete.  In order to make the best of time, it is recommended that the two tasks be conducted simultaneously.  review teams will determine how the process is to be done.
  • Task 1
    Review Work Samples

    check if samples for Fall/Winter/Spring are available for each of the four subject groupings listed.

    comment only objectively (e.g. samples included narrative, expository, etc. or math sample included computation/problem solving etc.)

    Discussion/Dialogue

  • ask the questions and check appropriately
  • any comments must be objective, record what the parent offers by way of detail/explanation.
  • Suggestions made/General Comments

  • make program comments or suggestions only if they intend to continue home schooling next year and record their intention in the space provided.
  • Plans /Intentions for the 2000-2001 School Year.

  • ask the parent if they intend to continue homeschooling next  year and record their intention in the space provided.
  • Task 3
    Determination

    Inform them of the following

  • the completed form will be forwarded to a supervisory officer for The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board
  • a letter will be sent to the parent as soon as possible regarding whether or not satisfactory instruction has taken place
  • ask the parent if they would like a copy of the grade-appropriate Ministry report card and Language/Math Outcomes (tracking sheets), provide as requested.
  • if the parent has any questions, feel free to answer them or if you are not sure, ask that they contact Malcolm Powell, Supervisor, Social Work Services at the Education Centre; parents may arrange to go to the office and see it at any time.
  • if the instruction is determined not to be unsatisfactory, the letter will request that the child return to school.
